Well said, never thought of conceptualizing climate change in such a historicized fashion. This piece is so underrated and should have reached a larger audience.

The political implications of Roman climate also remind us that climate has always been a political issue, with down-to-earth implications. This debunks the myth that pure 'science', 'innovation' or 'market mechanisms' could pull us out of a hot mess of climate change, especially where today, unlike the ancient romans, our socio-economic system is the precise cause of the changes we see in the climate.
